One more round of blog comments to go, so let’s make this a fun one…who was your favorite guest speaker this semester and why? –A

In case you forgot the lineup:

LAST Google Hangout

Our last Google Hangout will be on Wednesday, December 10 at 3 pm. I am so excited that former Gator alumna and current sports journalist for ESPN and the SEC Network, Laura Rutledge will be hanging out with us. Laura has had quite the career since graduating from the College of Journalism in 2011. She has previously worked for FOX Sports as a Big 12 football sideline reporter, Pac 12 basketball reporter, as well as the Tampa Bay Rays and San Diego Padres baseball reporter. Aside from working with ESPN, Laura currently also works for CNN as a host for their international sports show “World Sport”, Bleacher Report on CNN and The Robin Meade show on HLN. Please join me for our last Hangout of the semester!!!!

Instructions for attending the Hangout:

Option 1: If you have a Gmail/Google+ account click here and it should take you right to the event (you’ll have to click on the video on that page). The nice thing about using G+ to view the hangout is that it it has several awesome features: it allows you to ask questions before and during our session and you can like or dislike certain moments in the hangout. You might want to visit the link now and click: YES for the ‘are you going to watch’ question- it should send you reminders.

Option 2: If you don’t have a Google+ account you can still watch the Hangout via Youtube: Link Here. You will see a countdown until the event starts, but as soon as we go “live” you will see the video. This version is not as engagement-friendly as the G+ version. You can still send questions for Laura via Twitter, using #SportsMediaUF.

Remember that you must attend at least 1 Hangout this semester and within 48 hrs write up and submit a 1 page paper about reflecting on what you learned (see syllabus for more directions).

Google Hangout with Kenton Olson

Our next (and maybe last) Google Hangout will be on Thursday, December 4 at 7pm. Kenton Olson, the director of digital media and emerging media for the Seattle Seahawks will be hanging out with us and talk anything and everything social media and the Seahawks.  I am really excited for this Hangout because Kenton is one of the best in the business. I hope you’ll hangout with us!!!!

Thoughts on Hangouts

We’ve had a number of Google Hangouts this semester and I would love to hear what you think about them… How do you like the hangouts? Thoughts on the participants of the hangouts (Lauren Murray, Gregg Doyel, Rob London)? Do you feel like you’re you getting something out of attending the hangouts? Sound off in the comments and let us know! – A

Tiger on Players’ Tribune

Latest piece on The Players’ Tribune is very relevant for this class and I think really interesting for a number of reasons:

1. It is written by Tiger Woods

2. It is an article in which Tiger criticizes the media (or at least a member thereof)

Take a look!

For context purposes, here is the original Golf Digest piece by Dan Jenkins.

The Players’ Tribune says this is the first of a number of articles “a series of columns we’re calling “Straight Up.” It’s a place where athletes can offer their side on something that has been written or said about them.”

Are you surprised Woods would choose an outlet like The Players’ Tribune? Are you surprised this is Tiger’s first article (topic wise)? How do you feel about it being a platform where athletes can provide commentary about things that were said about them in the media?

Adrian Peterson Update

Big story today – Adrian Peterson has been suspended by the NFL for the remainder of the season. It’ll be interesting to see the coverage of this over the next few days.

The NFL stated,

You have shown no meaningful remorse for your conduct. When indicted, you acknowledged what you did but said that you would not ‘eliminate whooping my kids’ and defended your conduct in numerous published text messages to the child’s mother. You also said that you felt ‘very confident with my actions because I know my intent.’ These comments raise the serious concern that you do not fully appreciate the seriousness of your conduct, or even worse, that you may feel free to engage in similar conduct in the future.

AP is appealing the decision. Take a look at the press releases from both the NFL and the NFLPA.

Google Hangout #4

Our next Google Hangout is happening Wednesday, November 19 at 7pm. NFL advisor, Rob London will virtually join us and talk about the business of sports, his career as an agent and advisor to athletes like Matt Forte and Maurice Jones-Drew. This is a great hangout, especially for those of you in the sports management track.
